Scissett First Team: A Rollercoaster start to 2025!!

  • Our first team had an interesting start to 2025, picking up a massive win and falling just short against some tough opposition. Due to the weather over the Christmas period, the firsts went a month without a game, something which put them on the backfoot.

  • Our first game back was against Bessacarr JFC’s first team in the county cup a less than favourable first game back following the winter break. The boys put their all into the game, whilst losing to a good team, they were not embarrassed.

  • Our next game came against high-flying Collegians Reserves. Scissett did lose again, but it was a close game. We gave Collegians a game right until the very end and showed why both clubs will be up challenging for promotion at the back end of the season. Marcus Carr picked up a late consolation goal late on, adding to an impressive performance.

  • We then had another very tough game on the first of February, as we came up against Golcar United Reserves, a team 6 divisions above Scissett, and full of ex academy players in their ranks. We did lose but we learnt a lot about ourselves individually and as a team, and it gave us a hard-earned lesson in coming up against a formidable team.

  • Following these three consecutive defeats, it was clear Scissett were capable of scoring goals, as they made chance after chance even from a losing position, it was just a case of having to put away chances. It would have been quite easy for the boys to start a downward spiral and really lose their form. But this was not to be, as our team bounced back in exactly the right way, showing the right attitude and determination, we have come to see in recent seasons.

  • We travelled to Woodkirk Valley Reserves, and put on a show for all in attendance, in a contender for game of the season. Using the frustrations and lessons we had learned from our previous outings. We smashed eight past the home team to take home the welldeserved three points. Richard Humphrey, Chris Johnson, Kyle White and Grzegorz Laszczyk all chipped in with a goal apiece, with Tom Lockwood and Adam Mckie getting two goals to their name each.

  • To finish off this crazy ride that the team have been on, we hosted Wakefield Thornesians in the QF of the Hodgson Cup, and what a performance the boys put in. Matthew Hall bagged himself a hattrick of goals from set pieces and Chris Johnson pulled a spectacular acrobatic effort to put the game to bed as we beat the visitors 4-1 and advance to the Semi-Final.

  • With these back-to-back wins, we are now in a more stable position, and are doing just what we need to do to advance up the league and put a nice string of positive results together.

  • After these games it leaves the firsts in third place and in a very promising position to do challenge for promotion this season, in our first season in the YAL. Whilst the month was a tough start, and not something we want to be replicating anytime soon, we have responded in just the right way, and we will be looking to capitalise on the momentum we have begun to build up as we push for a strong finish to the league campaign.

  • Over the next month we have big games away at Dewsbury Rangers and home v Hanging Heaton on 15th March.
